Driving Safety

Learning to drive is an exciting time. It can give you more freedom and help you to travel places on your own.

Driving also comes with responsibility. Safe drivers understand the rules of the road and think carefully about the choices they make when they are behind the wheel.

Building good habits early, staying focused and knowing how to deal with pressure or nerves can help you become a safer and more confident driver.

Tips for New Drivers

  • Say what you see - When you are driving, try saying hazards out loud as you notice them. For example, you might say "pedestrian crossing" or "car pulling out". This helps train your brain to actively look for hazards on the road instead of just glancing at them.
  • Build good habits early - Try to build safe habits from the start. Always wear your seatbelt, give cyclists plenty of space, and follow safe and legal speed limits. These habits will help keep you and others safe on the road.
  • Make safe choices every time you drive - Safe driving is not about being perfect. It is about making small, sensible choices every time you get behind the wheel. Taking your time and staying focused can make a big difference.
  • Learn how to check your tyres - It is important to know how to check your tyre tread. Tyres with good tread help your car grip the road and stop safely. Read more about tyre safety.
