Pornography

This page is for ages 12+. Some of the language and types of things explained aren't appropriate for younger children.

Pornography is when a video, story or image has been created to make someone feel sexually aroused. All porn is made for adults and is based on fantasy, which means it's very different from real-life relationships.

Watching porn is a choice, and it's not illegal to watch some types of porn when you are under 18, but it is illegal for someone to show you anything pornographic or give you access to it if you are under 16.

While lots of young people are curious about sex and might think porn can give them more information, it has an age limit of 18+ because watching porn can be harmful to young people and children. Reasons it could affect you include:

  • Giving you unrealistic expectations about sex and other people's bodies
  • Lowering your self-esteem and thoughts about your own body
  • Creating harmful attitudes towards women and girls
  • Affecting your mental health if you've seen unwanted images or videos
